- Question & answer
LOCTITE® EA 9460 is a gray, 2-part, thixotropic, modified epoxy adhesive with a great balance of properties. This smooth paste doesn’t need primers, and offers very high peel strength and excellent shear strength. It is easy to mix and dispense and, once cured, is impact- and fatigue-resistant. Its balance of properties provides application flexibility, making it ideal for bonding dissimilar substrates, including metals, engineering thermoplastics, and thermoset laminates such as sheet molding compound (SMC).

How to use
When mixing by hand, combine Part A (Resin) and Part B (Hardener) in the correct ratio and mix thoroughly until the color and consistency are uniform; EPOXI-PATCH® Tube Kits are designed so that squeezing equal-length beads of Part A and Part B provides the proper ratio. It is recommended to mix the adhesive just prior to use, and while the temperature of the individual components before mixing is not critical, they should be close to room temperature. Heat build-up during and after mixing is normal; to reduce the risk of an exothermic reaction or excessive heat buildup, mix less than 4,500 grams at a time, as smaller quantities minimize heat generation. When mixing using a cartridge, place the cartridge in the proper dispenser, remove the cap from a new cartridge, and dispense a small amount to ensure both Parts A and B are flowing, then attach the nozzle and dispense approximately 2.5 to 5.0 cm of adhesive before applying it to the part to be bonded. Partially used cartridges should be stored with the mixing nozzle attached, and for reuse, the old nozzle should be removed and discarded, a new nozzle attached, and dispensing resumed.
Bonding surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of contamination.
Once the adhesive is applied, the bonded parts should be held in contact until the part has developed handling strength. Fixturing can be removed at this point. Since the full bond strength has not yet been achieved, load application should be small at this time.
Complete cure is achieved after 72 hours at 25 °C. LOCTITE® EA 9460™ can also be fully cured using heat, such as 6 to 8 hours at a maximum temperature of 149 °C. After 24 hours, approximately 90% of the full cure properties are achieved at room temperature. Other cure times and temperatures, with 149 °C as the suggested maximum, may be used depending on the application, and heat cure cycles can be modified to achieve the desired degree of cure, ranging from handling strength to full cure.
It is important to clean up excess adhesive from the work area and application equipment before it hardens. Denatured alcohol and many common industrial solvents are suitable for removing uncured adhesive.
FAQ
Yes, bonding surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of contamination.
LOCTITE® EA 9460 should be stored in an unopened container in a dry location, as indicated on the product container labeling, with an optimal storage temperature range of 8°C to 21°C. Storage below 8°C or above 28°C can adversely affect product properties. Material removed from the container may become contaminated during use and should not be returned to the original container.
The tensile strength of this product is 30.3 N/mm², measured at 25°C in the cured material state using the ISO 527-2 test method.
LOCTITE® EA 9460 (HVAC)is recommended for bonding, chassis, and powertrain.
