The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is a game-changing set of rules that applies to all EU countries. It harmonizes sustainability requirements in the packaging sector, with far-reaching impacts across industries. All non-compliant packaging will be banned by 2030 so businesses must take action right now. That’s why many companies are seeking a trusted partner to overcome PPWR challenges. And Henkel is that partner.

What’s changing?

Those PPWR-related challenges cover a wide variety of interlinked topics. Businesses need deep expertise to help navigate dozens of new requirements for recyclability, packaging content and labelling. They also need to manage national deviations from PPWR, despite the EU-level harmonization.

New rules require companies to design packaging for reuse or recycling and contribute to ambitious targets for waste reduction. Supply chains must adapt to exclude PFAs and other restricted substances. The PPWR also creates work related to substantiating claims about sustainability and documenting regulatory compliance.

What do businesses need to do?

Many elements of the PPWR have a 2030 deadline: But 2030 is NOW! Companies urgently need to take action and get ahead of this transformation before non-compliant packaging gets their products banned across the EU. To avoid losing business, there’s not a moment to lose: Businesses must adapt to PPWR quickly and effectively before it’s simply too late.

Audits are the first step to assess how packaging measures up against new rules for recycled content, recyclable designs or substances of concern. Businesses can then create a roadmap for meeting key deadlines and begin training their team to understand expectations related to topics such as extended producer responsibility (EPR), labelling or documentation.
