When it comes to removing baked-on gaskets from metal surfaces, LOCTITE® SF 790 is the way to go. This methylene chloride based formula is ideal for lifting off chemical gaskets, gasket cements and sealants, as well as paint and varnish. Its aerosol spray means you can apply to intricate shapes with maximum penetration, and the product won’t run off – even on vertical surfaces.

How to use
Hold the can upright approximately 1" from the gasket area to be sprayed and spray the area to be stripped. Allow 5 to 10 minutes for foaming action to break down the old gasket. After use, turn the can upside down and spray for 3 seconds to clear the nozzle
Remove the old gasket with a plastic putty knife or scraper. Wipe the flange with a clean rag. Conduct a final clean with LOCTITE® SF 7070 and a clean rag to remove any residue wax on the surface.
The technical data sheet suggests 5-10 minutes to react on the surface. The thicker the spray and the longer the product sits on the surface, the deeper the penetration into the material to be removed.
FAQ
If a substrate is dirty, the bond is only as strong as the adhesion of the contaminant to the part, not the adhesive to the part. Contaminants can come from machining, protecting, handling, manufacturing, facility surroundings, and even from cleaners used previously that have left a film. Just a slight oil film left behind on a substrate, can reduce adhesive performance by as much as 60 percent.
It is strongly recommended to do a secondary cleaning after using LOCTITE® SF 790™ if adhesives or gaskets are going to be re-applied. LOCTITE® SF 790 contains a wax and that may limit adhesion of adhesives in the next step if not removed. Following with a solvent-based cleaner like LOCTITE® SF 7063™ or SF 7070™ will remove the wax residue.
