The automotive roadmap to net-zero

The Henkel Adhesive Technologies Automotive Sustainability Ambition 2030 is all about bold targets and concrete actions. A clear roadmap for achieving net-zero in our industry. For us and our customers.

Climate-neutral operations

We will be the first global adhesives player with climate-neutral operations, with energy efficiency, certified systems, and investment in renewables. In fact, 19 Henkel sites are already carbon neutral.

Net-zero and low-emission products

We will offer net-zero or low-emission, recycled and bio-based products to all our customers, while ensuring superior product safety and 100% transparency on sustainability data and impact.

Solutions that enable circularity and reduce emissions

We will offer all of our customers solutions and services that enable emissions reduction and promote circularity by reducing waste while increasing efficiency.

Enabling circularity

Our portfolio of innovative technologies is purposefully designed to drive circularity across the automotive value chain.

Our debonding-on-demand solutions help customers to repair, reuse, and recycle components at scale, supporting compliance with global regulations, accelerating progress toward ambitious sustainability targets, and meeting consumer demand for responsible mobility. Beyond this, our recycling-compatible adhesives, bio-based materials, and sustainable packaging solutions reduce environmental impact and enable true circular practices.

As a co-founder of Path.Era, a scalable ecosystem for digital battery passports, Henkel also contributes to industry-wide transparency. Path.Era ensures traceability of EV batteries, providing key data on carbon footprint, materials, and recyclability.

Sustainability in action

Henkel experts break down our approach to sustainability: Challenge, Re-create, Champion, and what it means in practical terms for our customers and the future of the automotive industry.

Sustainable operations

One of our biggest sustainability commitments is to be the first global adhesives player to reach climate-neutral production by 2030.

Our goal of achieving sustainable operations is driven by ambitious, wide-reaching targets - including circular water and waste management within our operations, and establishing a net-zero pathway for Scope 1 and 2 emissions

The transformation has already begun. Currently, 19 Henkel automotive sites operate with carbon-neutral production, and 96% of them use renewable electricity.

This goal is made up of various, wide-reaching targets, including: circular use of water and waste materials in our operations; creating a net-zero pathway for our scope 1 and 2 emissions.

We have also invested heavily in water-efficiency projects around the world, and have reduced waste per ton of product by 36%.

Technologies and materials enabling sustainability

The way we design, build, use and reuse materials is core to our sustainability efforts. It’s why we’re committed to offering net-zero or low emission products to all of our customers, helping them reduce their carbon footprint. We design sustainable technologies to help customers to reduce their environmental footprint in production to realize energy & water savings, reduction of waste and to support sustainable material reuse.
