- Description
- Technical specification
When you need a low strength, silicone-based, form-in-place gasketing product designed for use on flexible flanges with machined or cast surfaces (metal or plastic), LOCTITE® SI 5910 is a good choice. It is suitable for gaps up to 1mm (0.039") and offers a cure-through volume (in 24 h) of 2.75mm (0.108"). Typical applications include stamped sheet metal covers (timing covers and oil sumps). Its thixotropic nature reduces the migration of liquid product after application to the substrate, allowing for reliable quality control, e.g. in dispensing automation as well as manual applications.

How to use
For best performance bond surfaces should be clean and free of dirt, dust, oil and any other contaminants. Use LOCTITE® SF 7070, solvent based general parts cleaners, for the surface pre-treatment.
Moisture curing begins immediately after the product is exposed to the atmosphere, therefore parts to be assembled should be mated within a few minutes after the product is dispensed.
Excess (uncured) material can be easily wiped away with non-polar solvents. Remove cured material using a knife or single edge razor blade.
The bond should be allowed to cure (e.g. seven days), before subjecting to heavy service loads
For full automatic applications a volumetric dispensing system is recommended.
FAQ
In a nutshell: Thixotropic adhesives and sealants allow ease of handling during application. Thixotropic behavior results in easy flow dispensing and application, while preventing the migration of liquid product once its applied to the part. The word comes from the two Greek words thixis (shaking or mixing) and trepo (turning or changing). It refers to the viscosity being temporarily reduced when a stress is applied, e.g. product being extruded/stirred or brought into motion. Thixotropic adhesives allow for managing the flow during and after application. Meaning they are easy to extrude but stay in place after application as they revert back to their initial, thicker state.
