Welcome to Henkel Packaging Recyclab Shanghai. We offer comprehensive recyclability assessments of fiber-based packaging materials. The results can be used for material  innovation and packaging optimization, supporting the transition to a circular economy.

Overview of Henkel Packing Recyclab Shanghai

Henkel PACKAGING RECYCLAB Logo

As the global transition toward a circular economy accelerates and European Union's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) tightens, packaging compliance has become a critical factor for European market access. To meet this challenge, Henkel’s global dual-lab strategy in Dusseldorf, Germany, and Shanghai, China, brings international expertise directly to local markets.

Henkel Packaging Recyclab Shanghai has explored a new route to certified packaging recyclability testing in Asia-Pacific, which applies two recognized European paper packaging recyclability test protocols, CEPI/4evergreen and CHI. By combining professional testing with “Design for Recycling” guidance, we help businesses optimize their packaging and secure an efficient path to global compliance.

Testing methods in detail

CEPI/4evergreen cross-industry alliance

This test method was developed by the 4evergreen cross-industry alliance to provide a future-ready standard methodology for Europe for proving the recyclability of fiber-based packaging in paper mills. We focus on the methodology for mills with a conventional process.

Cyclos-HTP Institute (CHI)

The CHI test protocol was developed by the independent experts at cyclos-HTP. It delivers a full report and optionally a legally binding certificate*.

  • Following CHI x Henkel protocol including two pulping times
  • Delivers evidence and legally binding certificate from CHI (optional)
  • Includes assessment of real recycling paths (sortability, contaminants etc.)
  • 100% PPWR* conformity

*We will perform the paper tests for the certificate. Additional operations and testing will be directed to CHI for further assessment
*Certification is granted by the cyclos-HTP Institute (CHI) or equivalent third-party institute
*According to the PPWR version published on February 11, 2025

Standard test: Detailed work steps

Discover more about the testing steps by interacting with the hotspots on the picture below.

Step 1: Preparation of samples

Cutting the sample material into pieces 3 cm x 3 cm.

Paper recyclability lab, step 8 of testing, comparison of paper
Step 2: Disintegration

Disintegrating the oven dry sample material in tap water.

Step 3: Filtration

The disintegrated substrate is Büchner-filtered to determine the evaporation residue.

Step 4: Screening

Impurities are removed by filtration trough 5 mm (coarse) and 150 µm (fine) sieves to obtain rejects

Step 5: Sheet inspection

The paper sheets are assessed for their visual impurities and sheet adhesion.
