What are potting compounds?

Potting compounds are one- or two-part materials designed to fully encapsulate electronic assemblies within a housing. The materials harden after curing and secure all electronics in place, protecting encapsulated electronics from shock, vibration, chemicals, liquids, high heat environments, and other potentially damaging conditions.

Why use potting compounds?

Potting compounds are often employed for the highest-reliability applications, such as automotive and aerospace, or any electronic device subjected to high heat and/or high humidity. The materials deliver enhanced mechanical strength, electrical insulation, and improved thermal reliability. Once encapsulated, potting is permanent and not reworkable.

Choosing potting compounds

Available in one- or two-part formulations, potting compounds are supplied in several chemistries, including silicones, urethanes, and epoxies. Selecting the proper materials depends upon the need for chemical resistance, heat dissipation requirements, flame retardancy standards, and processing preferences, among other factors.
