Signify’s Valladolid plant has optimized its painting process with Henkel using APNR technology and Bonderite M-NT 5923. The solution improves corrosion protection while reducing energy consumption, CO₂ emissions and costs. Enhanced salt spray performance and greater efficiency strengthen the plant’s competitiveness.
The pretreatment process in Valladolid has evolved from conventional zinc phosphating to chrome-free TecTalis and nanotechnology-based Bonderite M-NT 2040. The next goal was to further improve corrosion protection while reducing energy use, CO₂ emissions, costs and resource consumption. The solution needed to boost productivity and integrate seamlessly into the existing infrastructure without major equipment investments.
Signify collaborated with Henkel to introduce APNR (Adhesion Promoter No-Rinse) technology at its Valladolid plant. APNR applies an adhesion promoter directly to the cleaned surface, eliminating the need for a rinse stage. Bonderite M-NT 5923 was selected for its high corrosion resistance, process stability and efficient process control.
The APNR panel was integrated into the existing line without major modifications or production disruption. Lab and field trials confirmed the solution met quality and sustainability requirements. Next, the BONDERITE E-CO dosing system will further automate chemical management.
Switching to APNR with Bonderite M-NT 5923 has delivered measurable benefits at Signify’s Valladolid plant. Corrosion protection now consistently exceeds 1,500 hours in salt spray testing, with extended trials reaching up to 3,000 hours.
The streamlined process also reduces energy and CO₂ emissions, lowers material consumption and improves line productivity. By eliminating the primer step and integrating the coating process, Signify operates more efficiently and sustainably while maintaining high quality.
“The introduction of APNR technology was a real milestone for us,” says Laura Rodriguez, Process and Environmental Engineer. The close collaboration with Henkel helped Signify improve coating quality while reducing emissions and energy consumption. The results support Signify’s sustainability strategy by lowering resource use, strengthening corrosion protection, and extending product lifetime.
Signify is a global leader in lighting solutions with a worldwide production network and stringent requirements for quality, efficiency, and sustainability. The plant in Valladolid plays a key role in this network. It manufactures and coats components that must perform reliably for many years in the field, even under demanding environmental conditions.
