As a part of China’s promise to deliver ecological and sustainable hosting of the Winter Olympic Games in 2022, a new mass timber construction was commissioned. Named the Yanqing National Sliding Centre, the complex is home to the bobsled, skeleton, and luge competitions. Glulam was chosen for its strength and high performance in harsh conditions and extreme climatic conditions.
Covering an area of 125,937 m2 with a vertical drop of 127 meters, it is the world’s longest track (1,931 meters long which can be extended by 300 meters for competitions). Artificial ice and snow are made with new equipment using green electricity and requiring less than 60% of resources needed for comparable ice rinks.
- The venue opened in February 2021, a year ahead of the scheduled Olympic 2022 events
- It has a capacity for 10,000 spectators
- CLT elements are manufactured with LOCTITE HB S309 and HB S709
