Encapsulants

Encapsulants are used to protect electronic components and assemblies from moisture, dust, chemicals, vibration, thermal stress and mechanical damage. By surrounding or covering sensitive components, these materials help improve electrical insulation, adhesion and long-term reliability in demanding electronics applications. The right encapsulant compound also supports the required balance of protection, processing speed, flexibility and reworkability.

Encapsulation materials for electronics applications.

Henkel offers encapsulation materials for protecting circuit boards, semiconductor packages and other electronic assemblies. The portfolio includes silicone, epoxy, urethane and acrylic chemistries, allowing manufacturers to select a material according to the assembly design, operating environment and production process. These encapsulants can be formulated for different dispensing, curing and performance requirements, including heat cure, UV cure and dual-cure systems.

  • Silicone encapsulants are soft and flexible, making them suitable for applications where components may experience vibration, shock or thermal expansion. Their elastic properties can help accommodate movement and reduce mechanical stress on sensitive parts. Epoxy encapsulants generally provide a harder, more rigid protective layer with strong adhesion and mechanical protection.
  • Epoxy encapsulants generally create a harder, more rigid protective layer with strong adhesion and mechanical protection.
  • Urethane encapsulants offer another option for protective potting and encapsulation, combining a comparatively flexible material profile with resistance to environmental exposure.
  • Acrylic encapsulation chemistries can be considered where fast curing, UV processing or reworkability is important. A UV-cure encapsulant may be suitable for assemblies designed around light-curing production processes, provided that the material can receive sufficient light exposure and is compatible with the components and substrates.

Polymer encapsulation for electronic components

Polymer encapsulation protects components by creating a continuous material barrier around selected areas or the complete assembly. The encapsulation of electronic components can help limit moisture ingress, contamination and mechanical stress while supporting stable electrical performance. Depending on the application, encapsulation compounds may be dispensed as a dam-and-fill system, a glob top, a potting material or another precisely controlled package-protection format.

For semiconductor packaging, semiconductor encapsulants must be selected for compatibility with dies, substrates, wires, lead frames and the intended cure process. Polymer encapsulation can be tailored for adhesion, flow, viscosity, thermal resistance and electrical insulation. Process control is essential: dispensing behavior, flow, cure profile, film or package geometry and final material properties all influence the result.
